University Traditions
Traditions at universities play a crucial role in shaping the student experience and fostering a sense of community. Unique university traditions serve as a link between the past and present, creating a shared identity and sense of belonging for students, faculty, staff, and alumni. As we continue to move into the future we seek to create new, cultivate existing, and revitalize old traditions and rituals to continue to foster a sense of community while evolving to meet the changing needs of our students.

Campus Awakening
The new academic year is officially ushered in at dawn with students, staff, faculty and administration in a sunrise celebration on the first day of classes. Afterwards, everyone gathers in Blake Student Commons Dining Room for a sumptuous breakfast buffet.
Fall Campus Day/Friends & Family Day
Each fall, the entire student body along with friends and family enjoy a day on campus featuring food, novelty giveaways, photo booths, lawn games and the chance to connect with faculty, staff, and alumni.
Munchie Mania
During the first night of final exams in the fall and spring, University administrators serve the students snacks and refreshments during an evening study break as a way of showing their support for students entering into exam periods.
Performing Arts Concerts & Theatre Productions
Every semester the Performing Arts Department hosts a variety of musical, theater, and dance performances to highlight the talents of our students, both on stage and behind the scenes.
Senior Week
Activities are planned by Student Life in collaboration with members of the graduating class the week before Commencement for all graduates. Lasting memories are created by the seniors during their final week before graduation in both in person and online events and activities.
All Communities
Convocation
Convocation is a beloved University tradition where we congratulate our seniors on reaching their final year as well as formally induct our new undergraduate students into the academic community by reciting a call and response, surrounded by our faculty and staff. On ground and local online students are welcomed to campus for the ceremony, with additional programming planned for those who cannot attend in person.
Academic Achievement Day
A day of celebration and sharing where we open the literal and virtual classroom doors to all. Each spring the physical and virtual campus transforms into a shared classroom. Over the course of the day, students showcase their research, creative works and experiential learning outcomes in a variety of presentations, lectures, panels and performances both in person and online.
Marcia H. Conrad Awards Program
This hybrid evening program invites friends and family as we recognize the many accomplishments of students who have participated and excelled in academic and co-curricular programs during the academic year. The program is named after the University’s longtime, beloved former Dean of Students.
