Purpose: To provide additional guidance in the appointment of individuals to serve in a clinical faculty position within the Bay Path University PA Program.

I. Criteria for Initial Appointment as Clinical Faculty: 
Individuals may be considered for appointment as clinical faculty if the following criteria are met or exceeded:

A. Licensure/Certification: The individual must be a graduate of an accredited program, be currently board certified, hold a master’s degree (or higher) and be currently licensed    unless employed in a federal institution that does not require state licensure. 

B. Orientation:  Received and read Department Student Guidelines and Manual to include program mission statement, program and student policies.

C. Professional Conduct: Exhibit professional conduct as a role model for students, including behavior, attitude, appearance, and interactions with patients, students, faculty, and staff.

D. Contribution Criteria: Must agree to participate in one or more of the following during the first year of appointment:

1. Academic Element-Didactic Lectures: must provide six contact hours of classroom lectures per calendar year.
2. Academic Element-Small Group Leader: must facilitate at least one small group activity in either the didactic or clinical year for one complete semester.
3. Academic Element-Clinical Preceptor: must serve as a clinical preceptor with direct responsibility for student education for a four-week period per calendar year.
4. Academic Element-Curriculum Development: Substantial contributions to the didactic, clinical, and/or faculty development curriculum may be considered as meeting the full requirements. This could include complete course/block/syllabus revision (syllabus, handouts, and examination update); ongoing assistance with objective revision and development, examination revision and update; and textbook review and recommendation. 
5. Academic Element-Student Remediation/Tutor: Provision of remediation and/or tutoring on an as-needed basis, as prescribed by the remediation plan designed by full-time Department faculty.
6. Recruiting/Admissions Element: Provision of substantial and ongoing assistance in the form of prospective student advisement, counseling, recruiting, and participation in the application, interview, and/or selection process.

II. Criteria for Continued Appointment as Clinical Faculty

A. General Considerations: Clinical faculty appointments will be reviewed annually for consideration of continuation and rank promotion. Candidates for continuation must provide the Department with an updated CV, documentation of current certification and licensure, if applicable, and a plan for contribution elements for the proposed year of appointment. Consideration for rank promotion will be evaluated based on the criteria listed for each academic rank below.
B. Continuation Requirements: Individuals may be considered for continuation of appointment if the following criteria are met or exceeded:

1. General: All criteria established for initial appointment must be continued on an annual basis and are reflected in the contribution plan for the proposed year of appointment.
2. Faculty Development: Must agree to attend one of the following during the year of continued appointment:

 a. Department Workshops: Participate in periodically offered Department workshops and required training. 
 b. One Minute Preceptor: Participate in an on-site development activity on student precepting with one of the full-time faculty. 

III. Criteria for Rank of Clinical Assistant Professor: An individual may be considered for initial appointment or promotion to the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor if the following criteria are met or exceeded:

A. Degree Requirement: Master's degree or higher 
B. Years of Service to Department: Maintained a minimum of three years of continuous clinical faculty appointment or greatly exceeded the number of completed
Contribution Criteria elements during appointment. 

IV. Criteria for Rank of Clinical Associate Professor: An individual may be considered for initial appointment or promotion to the rank of Clinical Associate Professor if the following criteria are met or exceeded:

A. Degree Requirement:  Terminal degree for the profession.
B. Years of Service to Department: Maintained a minimum of seven years of continuous clinical faculty appointment.
C. Contribution to Profession: During the seven-year period, exhibit evidence of service such as state Committee Chair or Board Member, elected office in a professional organization, or receipt of an award/recognition for contribution to the profession.
D. Contribution to Scholarly Activity: During the seven-year period, exhibit evidence of scholarly publication such as a monograph, book chapter, journal article, enduring CME activity, or presentations at CME meetings sponsored by a state or national organization.

V. Criteria for Modified Faculty Appointment: As defined above, modified faculty appointments will be utilized for individuals who provide academic services to the department for a temporary period and who will receive appropriate monetary compensation for those services.
