Challenge of a Final Course Grade
A student who wishes to challenge a final course grade may do so through the process outlined below.
Step 1: Informal Resolution with Course Instructor
The student must first attempt to resolve the concern directly with the course instructor.
- The student must submit a written request via email to the course instructor within 14 calendar days of the due date for final grade submission in this course. This request must provide clear rationale as to why the student believes the final course grade is incorrect.
- The course instructor is expected to respond within a reasonable timeframe, not to exceed 5 calendar days from receipt of the student’s email.
- If the student and course instructor reach an agreement and a grade change is warranted, the course instructor will notify the Registrar’s Office via email (copying the student) to request the grade change.
If the course instructor does not respond within 5 calendar days, or if the matter is not resolved through this step, the student may proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Escalation to Program Leader
If the issue is not resolved informally, the student may formally challenge the final course grade.
Note: If the instructor of the course is also the Program Leader, this escalation should instead go to the Dean of the school.
- The student must submit a Challenge of Final Course Grade Form within 5 calendar days of the course instructor’s response, or 10 calendar days after a lack of response. Challenges submitted after this deadline will not be considered. Exceptions will be considered by the School Dean under extraordinary circumstances.
- The Registrar’s Office will forward the completed Challenge of Final Course Grade Form to the applicable Program Leader and/or Dean, who will gather any relevant information and make a determination regarding the grade within 7 calendar days.
Should the student disagree with the determination by the Program Leader/Dean in Step 2, the student may proceed to Step 3.
Step 3: Academic Appeals Committee Review and Determination
At this stage, a student must submit the following documentation to the Registrar’s Office (at registrar@baypath.edu):
- The original completed copy of the Challenge of Final Course Grade Form.
- Documentation/correspondence relevant to the student’s attempts to informally resolve the issue with their instructor.
- Email determination from the Program Leader and/or Dean.
The Registrar’s Office will provide this information to the Academic Appeals Committee, who will meet to make a final determination on the student’s Challenge of Final Course Grade. The student will receive a response within 10 calendar days of receipt of the documentation.
